NS Nanotech, Inc., founded in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 2017, established NS Nanotech Canada in November 2022. The team from NS Nanotech Canada collaborates with McGill University scientists to accelerate the company’s ongoing nano-LED research. In Michigan, NS Nanotech has a prototype production facility to develop nitride semiconductors for UVC disinfection applications. It also holds exclusive licenses to an additional portfolio of nano-LED patents held by McGill University and the University of Michigan, actively collaborating with researchers there on the development of its nano-LED technologies.

Job Description

We are seeking a talented and motivated Junior Hardware Test Engineer to operate test systems required for the development of NS Nanotech’s light-emitting devices and participate in the systems’ design. The ideal candidate would have practical experience in operating complex optoelectronic and opto-mechanical test systems, and in developing test software and hardware. Work experience with optical benches, probe stations, and test result documentation would all be highly desired for this position. As part of a small start-up company, the candidate will be actively participating in the sample characterization efforts at NS Nanotech Canada. This is a hands-on, experimental role, perfect for someone who likes to roll up their sleeves and make things work.

Responsibilities

  • Operate optoelectronic and opto-mechanical test systems to characterize GaN-based samples.

  • Assist in designing, assembling, and debugging test systems.

  • Assist in optoelectronic components selection and sourcing.

  • Document and keep records of experiments properly.

  • Maintain test equipment and keep calibration records of the equipment.

  • Coordinate with the technical and management teams, as necessary.

  • Exhibit and mandate safe working and housekeeping practices.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor or higher degree in electrical engineering or similar.

  • 2+ years of experience in an industrial environment.

  • Experience with installation and maintenance of optoelectronic and opto-mechanical systems.

  • Experience with semiconductor characterization and metrology tools, including microscopes, spectrometers, and probe stations.

  • Experience with lab and laser safety procedures.

  • Familiarity with mechanical drawings, circuit diagrams, the use of hand tools, electronics assembly, machine shop operations, etc.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a small team.

  • Ability to work in a lab facility, including being comfortable with wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Ability to manipulate small samples and their handling with tweezers.

  • Ability to routinely handle objects weighing up to 25 lbs and on occasion may be expected to lift objects weighing up to 50 lbs.

  • Work eligibility in Canada.

  • Fully vaccinated for COVID-19, as defined by Health Canada.

  • Available for immediate full-time work.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience in an industrial environment.

  • Experience working with optical tables and optomechanical components.

  • Experience with photoluminescence measurements and LED testing.

  • Familiarity with the MSP430 family of microcontrollers.

  • Familiarity with SolidWorks CAD software.

  • Familiarity with test automation software and hardware.

  • Familiarity with QA processes.

  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and apply new concepts.

  • Strong technical communications skills.

  • Written and verbal communication skills in French.
