Company Description

NS Nanotech, Inc., founded in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 2017, incorporated NS Nanotech Canada in November 2022. Senior researchers from NS Nanotech Canada will collaborate with McGill University scientists to accelerate the company’s ongoing nanoLED research. In Michigan, NS Nanotech has a prototype production facility to develop nitride semiconductors for UVC disinfection applications. It also holds exclusive licenses to portfolios of nanoLED patents held by McGill University and the University of Michigan, actively collaborating with academic researchers on development of its nanoLED technologies.

Job Description

We are seeking a talented and motivated test engineer to operate and design test systems required for the development of NS Nanotech’s light emitting devices. The ideal candidate would have experience in building test systems, developing test software, and running the tests themselves. Experience in test software languages (i.e. LabVIEW), electronic circuit prototyping, and mechanical design would all be highly desired for this position. As part of a small start-up company, the candidate will be leading the sample characterisation efforts at NS Nanotech Canada. This is a hands-on, experimental role, perfect for someone who likes to roll up their sleeves and make things work.


  • Design and develop optoelectronic test systems

  • Design, assemble, and debug test electronics

  • Build test hardware

  • Perform characterization of GaN-based samples

  • Program test software to meet the needs of a wide range of skill levels, from scientist to operator

  • Coordinate with the technical and management teams, as necessary

  • Document experiments properly

  • Exhibit and mandate safe working and housekeeping practices

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering or similar

  • 2+ years of experience in an industrial setting

  • Experience with assembling electrical and mechanical measurement apparatus

  • Experience prototyping electronic circuits

  • Experience with lab, laser and chemical safety procedures

  • Experience with semiconductor characterization and metrology tools, including microscopes spectrometers, and probe stations

  • Experience with photoluminescence measurements and LED testing

  • Familiarity with test automation software (LabVIEW, MATLAB) or other test control methods (i.e. microcontrollers)

  • Familiarity with mechanical drawings, circuit diagrams, the use of hand tools, electronics assembly, machine shop operations, etc.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a small team

  • Ability to work in a lab facility, including being comfortable with wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)

  • Ability to manipulate small samples and their handling with tweezers

  • Ability to routinely handle objects weighing up to 25 lbs and on occasion may be expected to lift objects weighing up to 50 lbs

  • Work eligibility in Canada

  • Fully vaccinated for COVID-19, as defined by Health Canada

  • Available for immediate full-time work

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

  • Willingness to periodically travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan

Preferred Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience in an industrial environment

  • Experience with vacuum systems

  • Experience working with optical tables and optomechanical components

  • Experience sourcing custom electronic and mechanical parts

  • Experience sourcing custom electronic and mechanical parts

  • Experience with electron microscopy (SEM)

  • Experience working in a cleanroom

  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting equipment

  • Familiarity with GaN-based devices

  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and apply new concepts

  • Strong technical communications skills

  • Background in photonics and optoelectronics

  • Written and verbal communication skills in French​
