Nanofabrication Engineer

Location: Montréal, Québec

Start date: Immediate

Company Description

NS Nanotech, Inc., founded in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 2017, incorporated NS Nanotech Canada in 2022. Senior researchers from NS Nanotech Canada collaborate with McGill University scientists to accelerate the company’s ongoing nanoLED research. In Michigan, NS Nanotech has a prototype production facility to develop nitride semiconductors for UVC disinfection applications. It also holds exclusive licenses to a portfolio of nanoLED patents held by McGill University and the University of Michigan, collaborating with researchers there on development of its nanoLED technologies.

Job Description

NS Nanotech Canada is looking for an engineer to join the R&D team, working on nano and micro-fabrication of optoelectronic devices. The ideal candidate has a strong background in electrical engineering, physics, and material science or chemistry with experience in III-V materials, and optoelectronic micro-device fabrication. The engineer will take responsibility for execution of routines and processes to fabricate NS Nanotech’s light emitting devices. As a member of a start-up company, the engineer will collaborate and coordinate with a diverse, multi-disciplinary group of engineers, scientists, and other technical team members. This is a hands-on role, where the candidate will spend a significant portion of their day in a cleanroom environment.

Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in development of the routines and processes to fabricate nano-/micro-light emitters. Processes are diverse, may include wafer dicing, thinning, bonding, packaging, photo- and electron-beam lithography, wet and plasma processing, material deposition and other processes related to microfabrication.

  • Calibrate processing equipment based on established standard operating procedures (SOPs).

  • Execute established routines for precision device processing to ensure highly reproducible results.

  • Perform precise, step-by-step characterizations during device fabrication.

  • Create detailed, complete, and accurate documentation of all processes performed and report directly to the senior scientists.

  • Actively contribute to writing operating procedures and result analysis reports.

  • Collaborate, assist, and coordinate with team members as necessary.

  • Travel to other universities, institutes, or laboratories to access different equipment, which are required for microfabrication processes, as necessary.

  • Keep track of samples and documents properly.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering, applied physics, material science or other relevant disciplines.

  • 2+ years of experience in a relevant industry is a strong asset.

  • Strong hands-on experience in semiconductor device fabrication.

  • Experience handling small semiconductor samples/devices.

  • Experience working in cleanroom ISO class 2 or equivalent.

  • Experience working with optical and/or electron-beam lithography tools.

  • Experience working with material deposition processes including electron-beam deposition, thermal deposition, sputtering, and atomic layer deposition.

  • Experience working with wet and dry etching processes.

  • Experience with metrology tools: SEM, optical and physical profilometer, spectral reflectance, spectroscopic ellipsometery.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a small team.

  • Ability to learn and work with new equipment quickly.

  • Work eligibility in Canada.

  • Fully vaccinated for COVID-19, as defined by Health Canada.

  • Available for immediate full-time work.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience in an industrial environment.

  • Experience with diverse and different model nano-/micro-fabrication processing tools.

  • Experience with metrology techniques to characterize semiconductor materials including SEM, XRD, XPS, EDX, etc.

  • Knowledge of GaN-based devices.

  • Knowledge of fabrication of light emitters.

  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and apply new concepts.

  • Strong technical communications skills.

  • Background in semiconductors and optoelectronics.

  • Willingness to travel to the United States on occasion.

  • Written and verbal communication skills in French.
