Company Description

NS Nanotech was founded in 2017 with the intention of commercializing technologies developed by Professor Zetian Mi at the University of Michigan. The company recently secured a subsequent round of funding and is looking to expand its research and development team. The developed products will be used to commercialize ultraviolet (UV) light-emitting devices for disinfection.

Job Description

We are seeking a talented and motivated materials scientist to research and synthesize the light emitting materials used by NS Nanotech’s devices. The ideal candidate will possess an understanding of high temperature materials processing and the electro-optical evaluation of light emitting materials. As part of a small start-up company, the materials scientist’s contributions will directly and significantly impact NS Nanotech’s product line and success as a world leader in UV disinfection. This is a hands-on, experimental role, perfect for someone who likes to roll up their sleeves and make things work.


  • Perform experiments to synthesize and improve NS Nanotech’s light emitting materials

  • Design controlled experiments

  • Measure electro-optical characteristics of materials

  • Statistical analysis of data

  • Coordinate with the technical and management teams, as necessary.

  • Proper documentation of experiments

  • Exhibit and mandate safe working and housekeeping practices.

Position Requirements

  • PhD in materials science, chemical engineering, or chemistry.

  • 3+ years of experience in an industrial setting.

  • Experience working with high temperature inorganic material synthesis.

  • Experience with luminescent materials.

  • Experience with experimental design.

  • Familiarity with statistical analysis software (JMP, Minitab, etc.)

  • Experience with electro-optical characterization of materials.

  • Experience with lab and chemical safety procedures.

  • US citizenship or work authorization and completed COVID-19 vaccination.

  • Available for immediate full-time work.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a small team.

  • Ability to work in a lab facility, including being comfortable with wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in an industrial environment.

  • Experience with nitride material chemistry or other phosphor materials.

  • Strong technical communications skills.

  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting equipment and processes.

  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and apply new concepts.

  • Familiarity with mechanical drawings, circuit diagrams, the use of hand tools, electronics assembly, machine shop operations, etc.
