Company Description

NS Nanotech was founded in 2017 with the intention of commercializing technologies developed by Professor Zetian Mi at the University of Michigan. The company recently secured a subsequent round of funding and is looking to expand its research and development team. The developed products will be used to commercialize ultraviolet (UV) light-emitting devices for disinfection and other state-of- the-art industries, including the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Job Description

We are seeking a talented and motivated Manufacturing Engineer with a passion for process and manufacturing development to develop a pilot scale manufacturing platform for expansion of NS Nanotech’s proprietary ShortWaveLight™ technology. This will include system and equipment design and on-site supervision of the start-up, continual improvement, and ongoing operation of pilot operations. This role directly impacts the company’s ability to manufacture ShortWaveLight™ solutions internally and with external partners.

The person in this role will be critical to the scale-up and manufacturing development of ShortWaveLight™ lamp modules in Ann Arbor. This hands-on engineer must work with the technical team to develop the process and equipment for pilot scale production of prototypes and first commercial production. The Manufacturing Engineer will be a hands-on contributor and provide local support and supervision of low volume production. The successful candidate will also support development of the quality program, SOP documentation, and ensure compliance with appropriate quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the senior management team with determining and aligning projects, allocating and integrating resources, etc.

  • Provide critical input to engineering and manufacturing strategies, objectives and staffing plans which will be most efficient, effective and profitable with respect to the commercialization of new products.

  • Supervise and participate in daily operations to meet operational goals of prototype assembly and test.

  • Establish scaled device manufacturing processes and equipment, ensuring manufacturing robustness and high-quality commercial products.

  • Set up and maintain pilot facility and equipment.

  • Optimize and improve production processes and equipment to maximize throughput and yield, ensure high quality products, and meet the company’s cost and capacity needs.

  • Manage on-site raw material inventories in support of manufacturing and process development.

  • Provide engineering expertise in the areas of manufacturing, equipment design/maintenance, technical documentation, and quality control.

  • Develop and document procedures and methods to ensure quality standards are met and maintained.

  • Recommend methods, materials and layouts for improvement based on manufacturing needs and capabilities.

  • Exhibit and mandate safe working and housekeeping practices.

  • Interface with custom equipment designers.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical or chemical engineering

  • 5+ years of experience in an industrial setting

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and familiarity with process equipment

  • Experience with mechanical design and prototyping electromechanical devices

  • Proficiency with SolidWorks or equivalent CAD design software

  • Ability to assemble prototypes by hand

  • Experience testing and characterizing prototypes devices against quality and performance specifications

  • Familiarity with mechanical drawings, circuit diagrams, the use of hand tools, electronics assembly, machine shop operations, etc.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a small team

  • Ability to work in a lab and pilot scale manufacturing facility, including being comfortable with wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)

  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • US citizenship or work authorization

  • Available for immediate full-time work

  • Ability to lift 25-lb objects

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in an industrial environment

  • Strong technical communications skills

  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting equipment

  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and apply new concepts

  • M.S. or equivalent in an engineering (Chem E or Mech E)

  • Demonstrated expertise in developing and scaling manufacturing processes and operations

  • Demonstrated understanding and skills in project management

  • Proactive, deliberate, continuous improvement mindset

  • Lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, ISO, or related experience

  • Experience in facility and EH&S management a plus

  • Demonstrated ability to operate in a small, fast paced, entrepreneurial company and understands what it is like to do “more with less”
